The importance of public speaking
One of my mentors was determined to show me the importance of public speaking. She knew it would be instrumental in my future success. Can you imagine a professional athlete who was afraid to perform in front of crowds? Or a businesswoman afraid to give a presentation?
My mentor knew where I was headed and she also knew what it would take for me to succeed. Now my mentor was no everyday person. She has won more championships than any male or female coach in the history of basketball excluding the legendary John Wooden. She has spoken to some of the most powerful groups in our country like the secret service.
She understood the importance of having a strong foundation in speaking. She instilled those same fundamentals in me. I have overcome my shyness and become a pretty good public speaker. Giving speeches to groups of more than 5000 people at a time.
Although that has been a great feat for a skinny little shy girl from Pensacola, FL it wasn't the most instrumental gift that public speaking gave me. I now have the ability to communicate my thoughts effectively.
Improved communication has opened up many doors in my life. Almost everything I have done was a direct result of my ability to effectively communicate with others.
Everyone should learn how to communicate even if they have no intention of becoming a public speaker.
